Decorator Tip - It’s all about the layers!

Not sure how to make your Christmas tree look like the ones you see in our showroom and on designers’ Instagram? Layering is the key!

We usually decorate our trees in the same order, layering certain types of florals and ornaments as we go. This is how we shop for/decorate our trees to make them look coordinated and dimensional…

1. Pick 2 (or 3) Base Florals in colors that are similar. Base Florals are usually larger/fuller like greenery or berry sprays.

2. Pick 2 (or 3) Focal Florals with a bit more complex texture but complimentary in color to your Base Florals. We choose to lay those right on top of our Base Florals to create Floral Clusters. We usually use large flower stems for our Focal Florals.

3. Pick 2 large Base Ornaments and push them farther into your tree, securing them closer to the base of the branches.

4. Add a few Texture Ornaments in complimentary colors. You’re looking for ornaments with (mostly) solid color but fun textures to create pops of color. Secure these midway on your branches.

5. Add a few Focal Ornaments. These will be your ornaments with designs. Secure them between midway and the end of your branches.

6. Finish off with a few Unique Ornaments or those with non-traditional shapes; like pinecones, snowflakes or even clip-in birds. Secure these well towards the end of your branches.

7. Lastly add your Ribbon Garland (we’ve found that a contrasting color works best). We have a lot of techniques for this but one of our favorites is to make ribbon loops that mimic the appearance of bows and drape the tails through any areas that need a little more fullness.

While it seems like a lot of steps the process usually moves quite fast, and we have found that layering is the best way to turn your Christmas tree into a decorator’s dream!
